How do you remove adhesive from the skin?

There is a chance, based on the amount of time the thermometer is on the forehead and the environment you’re within, that there may be a small amount of adhesive residue left behind. If this happens, moisten a cotton ball with 70% isopropyl alcohol or a daily moisturizer and rub briskly over the affected area of the skin. Use small, circular motions to loosen the adhesion residue, then rinse with cool water. Repeat if necessary.

How long is the shelf life of the reusable forehead thermomemer (C-8702)?

The shelf-life for the C-8702 is 5 years. These devices can be reused a number of times as the color changing, liquid crystal technology is “sandwiched” between layers of material, protecting the key component that indicates temperature.

Would the ambient environment affect the reading?

Yes, ambient temperatures can affect the reading. The thermometer should be used indoors at a room temperature, between 68°F and 86°F.

Are these considered Medical Devices?

Yes, these thermometers are considered a Class II Medical Device.

How do you read a liquid crystal thermometer?

Once the thermometer is applied, color will begin to develop within 15 seconds. A green color designates actual temperature. If you do not see the green color, look for blue or tan color. For blue, add 1°F and for tan, subtract 1°F.

Can I reuse a color-changing temperature indicator?

Our standard high temperature ascending labels and freeze technology have an irreversible color change, meaning that once they change in color, they don’t change back. This gives you a permanent record of temperature breach. We do offer freeze technology that can be reset, along with liquid crystal solutions that are continually indicating temperature.

How does ATI verify the performance of its color-changing indicators?

The performance of the color changing indicators is verified by subjecting the products to NIST calibrated heating and/or cooling apparatuses that step the production units through ramped temperature changes that are in fractions of a degree.  The tested production units are closely monitored by qualified lab technicians during the heating and/or cooling phase to ensure that the indicators trigger within the specified accuracy tolerance. ATI is proud to be ISO 9001:2015 certified. This means that our Quality management system is certified to an international standard to help ensure the integrity and quality of our products. ATI operates as an FDA registered facility.

How do the color-changing indicators activate/change color?

Liquid crystal thermometers are made using cholesteric liquid crystals that have the unique ability to reflect a single color of light at specific temperatures.  The liquid crystals are carefully formulated to change color at the correct temperature.

High temperature irreversible indicators utilize safe, high purity chemical compounds that have accurate melt points.  The compounds are combined with a red dye and applied to a porous substrate. When exposed to temperature above their response temperature, the compound melts, migrates to the front of the label, revealing a red color.

FCP products contain a technology which changes from solution to rigid gel within a 1°C range.  Density differences of the gel are used to create a change from green to red when the FCP is chilled below its response temperature.

BlindSpotz is a thermochromic ink that will permanently change from transparent to colored when chilled below its response temperature.

ViziRev is a resettable ascending indicator containing a microencapsulated phase change material that appears transparent at room temperature and turns white when chilled.  The indicator must be chilled about 8-10 degrees below its response temperature to turn white. When the indictor is warmed it will change from white (typically in the image of a snowflake) to transparent at its indicated response temperature.

How accurate are color-changing indicators?

Our color changing indicators vary in temperature accuracy range. Our high temperature ascending labels tracking 25°C (77°F) to 71°C (160°F) have an accuracy of ±1°C.  From 80°C (176°F) to 215°C (420°F) the indicator accuracies start at ±2°C and increase to ±3°C on the high end of the response temperature range. Our FCP products (tracking 15°C to -2°C) have a ±2°C accuracy rating, but ±1°C is also available. Our Blindspotz technology (tracking -4°C to 4°C) has a color change within 2°C. Our ViziRev technology has a ±1°C accuracy rating. With the ability for custom products, we can work through our R&D process to dial these ranges in for critical applications.

How do I handle and store my chemical indicators?
It’s very important to understand the temperature threshold of your chemical indicator upon handling and storage. The indicator is always active and will provide an irreversible reading at any point in the process. High-temperature indicators may need to be stored in a cooler, or at least within ambient temperatures lower than it’s known threshold. Freeze indicators must be kept warm, or at least above their critical threshold range.

It’s also important to note, when handling an indicator with a threshold close to body temperature (ie. 25°C), that the area displaying indication is not touched. We suggest holding the indicator by its sides to minimize false indication.
How does VarIoT technology work?

VarIoT follows the universal 8009 (01) standard set by AIM and GS1. This standard provides structure around a barcode or QR code in conjunction with a temperature threshold indicator. The barcode or QR code can provide extensive information about the product or manufacturer, but also provide scanners with a way of knowing where to look for a color-change to indicate temperature excursion. Along with universal scanning methods, our VarIoT app technology can be used to scan the label to gather that data and provide a digital record for storage.

What product information can I include within the VarIoT barcode or QR code?

There are a number of universal parameters that can be included within the barcode or QR code on your VarIoT label. The parameters can be referenced here. Our Sales Specialists can work with you on the customized data to streamline and simplify the process.
